Global law firm K&L Gates has announced the return of Isabelle De Smedt as a partner in its Brussels office. De Smedt re-joins the firm’s White Collar Defense and Investigations practice after her tenure at Alston & Bird.

De Smedt’s expertise lies in advising multinational companies on anti-corruption and fraud issues, including sanctions and export control matters. Her experience spans across regions such as the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. She also provides guidance on compliance issues and assists in developing anti-bribery programs.

Michael Scanlon, a leader of K&L Gates’ global Policy and Regulatory practice area, expressed enthusiasm about De Smedt’s return: “I am excited to welcome Isabelle back to the firm,” he said. He highlighted her ability to navigate complex business operations under various international sanctions.

Before becoming a partner at another firm in March 2017, De Smedt spent six years as an associate at K&L Gates. Her return is part of a broader expansion within the firm’s global Policy and Regulatory practice, which recently added several new lawyers and policy professionals.

Tony Griffiths, managing partner of K&L Gates’ European and Middle East offices, remarked on De Smedt’s capabilities: “Isabelle has worked with multinational companies around the world on developing and enhancing anti-corruption compliance policies.” He noted her skill in navigating regulatory trade requirements.

K&L Gates’ White Collar Defense and Investigations practice provides clients with advice on sensitive enforcement matters worldwide. The team handles internal investigations, represents clients in congressional probes, offers compliance advice to corporations, and assists with cases involving significant reputation or financial risks.
